In Memory of the late Nick Bateson Major Nick Bateson was an Officer in the British Army who was tragically killed in a cycling accident in Iraq on 1 May 2007. Nick was also a member of Corsham Running Club and trained with the club regularly during the week whilst based at JSU Corsham; weekends would see Nick escape Corsham to return home to his wife Angela. At age 49 Nick had boundless amounts of energy and was an inspirational athlete competing regularly in running, triathlon and orienteering events at the highest levels within the Army. One of Nick's last sporting achievements was finishing 50th in his age category in the 2006 World Triathlon Championships. Of course Nick was disappointed with this result that's the way he was, always looking to improve. To a few in the Club Nick was known as a reserved chap who was occasionally grumpy about his training, probably due to his level of dedication. To those who knew Nick well he was a positive, enthusiastic, happy go lucky up beat guy with a real witty sense of humour. Not only was he totally dedicated to his own training but someone who worked hard to encourage others into running, orienteering or triathlon. The many tributes from colleagues and friends posted on the internet and in the newspapers couldn't have outlined his personality and sporting profile better. Nick's training tips will stay with some forever and most will certainly be passed on to others. His 'mentoring service' offered to those experiencing long difficult periods of injury was much appreciated and now missed. Nick hadn't been with the Club for years but in his short time he made a marked difference to many members and was therefore a true asset. It was a real joy and privilege to have trained with such an energetic and inspirational person who took time to share his wealth of experience with others. Nick Bateson will be sorely missed ………
