 BRADFORD ON AVON  

1.  Follow the pack through the park until reaching a timber bridge on the canal.

2.  Cross the bridge turn right and follow the canal side, after a stile veer up left to enter a wood.

3.  Follow the main path to emerge on a road.

4.  Go uphill then Right on a corner along a track between houses to emerge at Westwood Motors.

5.  Turn Left then Right at Westwood Nursery School.

6.  Follow the road through Westwood and at a 'Road Narrows' sign and opposite a parked caravan,  bear left onto the bridleway and follow it to another road.

7.  Turn Left at the road, pass a barn and then Right on a corner down to Iford Manor, keeping the wall on your right.

8.  At the Manor House turn Left over the bridge and after 100yrds Right at a stone barn onto a footpath.

9.  Bear Left to follow Left hand field edge on a  visible path.

10.  Soon you will have a wood on your left, enter it at the 5 bar gate/stile and exit at another gate/stile.

11.  After crossing yet another gate/stile you reach a cluster of cottages, bear Left up the track briefly, and immediately Right at footpath sign over a little wooden bridge.

12.  Climb to a gate and along an enclosed  path to Middle House.

13.  Turn Right, then Right again at a T-junction to follow river.

14.  After the road turns away from the river go Left onto a footpath (opp. Iron gates) and across fields to a road.

15.  Turn Left and then Right onto second footpath immediately before Freshford bridge.

16.   Cross a field and through a kissing gate on to the riverbank.

17.  Follow the path ahead to Avoncliffe aqueduct.

18.  Go under it, turn Right at Cross Guns and onto the canal towpath towards B-O-A.

19.  Follow the towpath through the darkness all the way to the Tythe Barn in B-O-A.

20.  Turn Left down the steps and retrace your steps across the park to the station. 


 LACOCK

From The Red Lion C.Park, turn L then R past Tithe Barn.

R at end & L before the Church.  Cross the ford (bridge out of  bounds) and climb to kissing gate on R.

Along FP to Reybridge.  Cross river (bridge permitted) and immediately L over stile on to FP.  Over 2nd stile and SO along fence line to field.

L and follow edge of field to stile and bridge on L.   R after stile.  In 100m enter woodland to access bed of Wilts and Berks canal (derelict).  Follow the towpath which is being reconstructed as a cycleway, past an old brick bridge. 

After 500m turn R off the cycle path immediately before a gate to join a small footpath (not signed) up through a wood to a stile.  SO across field to gate.  SO to gateway SO to tarmac farm road where R and climb 1k to road.

Turn L and in 100m R over stile to cross paddock to 2nd stile where L toward pinewood.  Through gateway turn R and follow field edge to broken stile in corner and enter wood.

Follow path to stile and electric fence SO and follow edge of wood on R to stile.  Over stile and descend still roughly following wood boundary eventually round to R to a gate and stile.

SO through thistles crossing a mown ride to gate and stile.  Follow R hand field edge to gap, where through and out to road.

 SHORT ROUTE  turn L then R at Bell Inn and return to Lacock.

 LONG ROUTE  turn R then L at T junction towards Reybridge.  Along raised pavement and L onto river bank.  Follow to stile then gate and stile and SO to blue gate.

Continue to stile and bridge then head for river bridge in the distance from which R back to Lacock.


 CHERHILL DOWNS

Take the track at the left hand rear of the car park, soon fork right onto the Wansdyke path and follow it over the hill and down to meet a cross track at Baltic Farm. 

Turn left and follow this track for 1km before turning left to pass a plantation on your left and heading towards the monument on the hill in the distance.

Climb up onto Cherhill Downs and after the second gate at the summit turn left and make your way to the monument.

After admiring the view head off in a westerly direction almost parallel to the A4 below you, don't take the track down to the main road but continue west until eventually reaching some farm buildings where you turn left heading towards Calstone.  Join a metalled track  and follow down over a stream and up through farm buildings into Calstone. 

Turn left towards the Church and take the footpath to the right.  Join a track and follow left then right to the end.  The bridleway then climbs steeply bearing right up the hillside in front of you.

If you ever reach the top you will find yourself back on the track where you started, follow this right back to the car park.


  CASTLE COMBE  - SHORT ROUTE

Leaving the car park via the steps go down the road and on the left hand bend, go right at the footpath sign. Past the old school and through a stile onto the golf course, follow the path. First through long grass then along the edge of the course to eventually reach a stone bridge across the By Brook.  Cross the bridge and follow the tarmac path across the golf course.  The footpath bears left off the golf course, towards Nettleton Mill.  After going through a kissing gate, turn left between the Mill buildings on a footpath towards the stone clapper bridge.

Cross the bridge and climb, then descend to a minor road.  Turn left and follow the road for a mile to reach a footpath on the left, go through the wood bearing right downhill to reach the road.  Turn left and then soon right over a stone bridge.  Cross a stile then uphill.  100yds after the path levels out turn sharp left uphill on a clear path.  Enter the wood and follow the path to a wooden barrier.  Turn left down a stony gully to the road.  Turn right uphill to return to the car park.


 CASTLE COMBE  -  LONG ROUTE

Leaving the car park via the steps go down the road and on the left hand bend, go right at the footpath sign. Past the old school and through a stile onto the golf course, follow the path. First through long grass then along the edge of the course to eventually reach a stone bridge across the By Brook.  Cross the bridge and follow the tarmac path across the golf course.  The footpath bears left off the golf course, towards Nettleton Mill.  After going through a kissing gate, turn left between the Mill buildings on a footpath towards the stone clapper bridge.

Cross the bridge and climb, then descend to a minor road.  Turn left and follow the road for a mile to a road junction.  Enter the gate on the right and follow the wooded path.  A stile leads out of the wood and onto open hillside.

At a large wooden post, descend through a wood to reach a stream crossed by a stone slab.  Follow the edge of the wood round, then enter it and follow the path over a stile and down to the main road at Ford.  Turn left and left again to climb a tarmac lane, near the top turn right onto a footpath across a field and down through woods to Long Dean.

Bear left and climb via 2 gates onto a path overlooking the valley.  Follow for a mile and then fork right, uphill on a clear path.  Enter the wood and follow the path to a wooden barrier.  Turn left down a stony gully to the road.  Turn right uphill to return to the car park.


Return to main Index
