Corsham St George's Day 10k and 2k Fun Run - Background information The Corsham St George’s Day 10k Race takes place at the Corsham Town Football Club (Lacock Road) on Sunday 1st May, which is the day prior to the May Bank holiday. The race is ‘in honour’ of St George so we aim to hold it on the nearest Sunday to 23 April which is St Georges Day, but this year the lateness of Easter means that that Sunday would clash with Easter Sunday, so we’ve opted for the next weekend. The run, which is in its 29th year, is jointly organised by the Rotary Club of Corsham and Corsham Running Club. Many of the town organisations come together to provide support for the race and it has become a real community event. We have moved with the times and now rely on chip timing which gives accurate timing for all runners, and there is also a facility for on line entry as well, rather than depending on downloading the application form and using the postal services. The new gateway between the football and rugby clubs, coupled with a penned start (according to expected finish times) has alleviated runner congestion at the start. Last year there was congestion at the finish funnel and action has been initiated to prevent this in 2011 by allowing an exit route from the funnel onto the football pitch. There will be a professional warm-up and a physiotherapist will be on hand to ease those aches and pains at the end. The race route is fully marshalled and has a UKAA Certificate of Accuracy, which should make it a very enjoyable experience for the runners. As with previous years, the race will once again be run on the theme of St George’s Day and those who class themselves as “Fun runners” are encouraged to dress accordingly, regardless of whether you are a George or a Dragon. We are also hoping to attract more spectators this year with a BBQ, bar and refreshments, plus various stalls, pre-race music and entertainment. The 10k Run has become an important part of the Corsham Rotary Club’s fundraising calendar, and monies raised from the 2011 race will go to the RUH Prostate Cancer Unit and other local charities. Last year almost £5000 was raised for charity from the entry fees alone. Trophies will be awarded for 1st, 2nd & 3rd in all categories, plus winners of the mens and ladies team race. No one will go home empty handed as each competitor will be awarded a St George’s Day themed memento as well as a ‘goody bag’. Should you think about entering on the day then that should be possible if we have not been inundated with entries in advance in which case you will see that the race is full on the website. However if you intend to enter on the day please be aware that you must be present in the registration area by 9.45 am. Generally we would expect to have around 700 runners, so it does get busy. The cost to enter in advance is £9 Affiliated), £11 (Un-Affiliated) or, on the day £10 (Affiliated), £12 (Un-Affiliated). ‘Affiliated’ means that you are have an England Athletics registered number usually obtained by being a member of a Running Club. In addition to the main 10K race there is the opportunity for young people and beginner runners to take part in a 2k fun run which will take place approximately one hour before the main race. Entry for this race can be on the day by 0930 or in advance using the application form on this page. |
